    Computer Stuff (again!)
Have finally rounded the corner on my computer project. Have been working on a less space consuming way to get all my music together, rip the 1000's of vinyl LP's I have and pipe videos to the living room over the network.

    I present the evidence:

    The almost finished product..

This baby is an 1998 Apple Macintosh BeigeG3 motherboard (Rev.3), with 768MB RAM, a 1.0ghz Sonnet G4 CPU ZIF upgrade, a very rare Apple Bordeaux PERCH card (THE proverbial hen's tooth! - the one with the built-in Audio/Video and DVD decoder hardware), DVD-ROM, 120GB HD, FireWire, USB and a Radeon 9200 video card. It's got dual-boot and the installed operating systems are OS 9.2.2 and an XPostFacto install of Tiger OS X 10.4.11. It is fully connected to both the house network and internet.

All tucked into an attractive - COMPACT - shelf/table system that holds the turntable, cassette deck and home stereo system. I do all the vinyl ripping in OS 9, as the sound editing tool for .aiff format files is actually superior to what is freely available for OS X.

I fingered out a nifty video player - mplayer OSX - that will handle the video quite well, even across that 33mhz beige G3 PCI bus! While this isn't technically a machine that can handle video, for the most part, it makes a fair go of it. Eventually, I plan to lay my hands on a 'new world' Mac that will be built into a teevee stand and that will run videos straight off the web and can encode video.. But for now, I still have too much vinyl to sort through to really think on adding my VHS collection and a second computer project to the mix.

    Fun!

    Fuckit!

I'm clearing house shortly here and am going to post my fakes in through my 'foodandart' LJ. Will be fingering out how to get links to go through the journals and all that happy shit.

    Will be interesting.

I'd just kick back and have fun watching civilizations rise and fall, and enjoy watching the mortals make the same mistakes over and over again.

    GIMP!!
Well, this is nice! I tried to install the free 30 day demo of Photoshop CS 3 from the Adobe website yesterday and ended up spending almost all night trying to get the damn thing off my system. What is the need of programmers to make applications throw chunks of code all over the place and invisible files - Oh for chrissakes! - I ended up picking up a free utility called TinkerTool that makes the Finder show every file - there was CS3 stuff everywhere.

    Fuck this.

I found a real nifty free GNU graphics application called GIMP and guess what? It works! It works great and I can set it to take as much of the system resources as it needs. Runs super fast then.

Bob got home about 5 a.m this morning after working all night on some MTV 'Choose or Lose' election special. He was on the set a few days ago when the MTV commentators were practicing - they didn't strike Bob as the most adroit people on the planet.

Anyhow, there's not much else going on, I've been reading some really dark - jet black - Dr. Who slashfic and working on a few fanarts to go with the stories. Will post them somewhere..

It's snowing and rotten today, so I'm going to stay indoors and rip some vinyl LP's..

    New Computer!
Finally got the eternal problems with my computer squared away by getting a new one. Fast as a rocket, it is. and best of all, I can work on my fakes in *print* resolution, which means a chance to actually start to capitalize on the things - I've got enough of the damn things already. Time to put them to work.

Other than that, nothing much is going on.

    New OS Finally!
Whee! I got it installed... a month ago! IT took damn long enough, but I got the Panther into my trusty beige G3.

Also today, Apple announced that for their new Intel-chipped computers they have added a program (with applicable device drivers called) 'Boot Camp' so one can install a new copy of Windows XP onto their Intel-based Duo-Core Macintosh!!!

SO cool, and now I find out that there's another company out there working on a few command modules for the Unix kernel that runs under the Mac OS interface, so that Apple computers will eventually handle Linux as well. How cool is that? 3 OS'es that give virtually unlimited usage of software..

The ATI Raedon 7000 for Mac WASN'T!

It's a 'flashed' PC version that'll run in OS9 easily enough, though the ATI Control Panel will not recognize the card, so the control for it is through the contextual menu in the menu bar or running through the Apple Monitors control Panel.

The REAL ATI Raedon 7000 for Mac card had S-video and RCA video in/out ports. That's 50 bucks on ebay.

    Charming!

So, I've got a spare card I'm going to make a gift of to someone...

On a lighter note, I did manage to install Virtual PC 2.1.3 with Windoze 95 and got that running. I managed to find a copy of IE 5.0 for PC, installed that and all the 32-bit device drivers in the service pack and now have Soulseek running! Gong anyone?

    Grumble..
    Dammit, shit, shit, SHIT!!!

I found out I'll have to stick with Mac OS 9.2.2 for a long while longer..

My Wacom tablet isn't usable in OSX, as Apple in it's infinite wisdopm decided NOT to support the Apple Desktop Bus 'legacy architecture' in the new OSX software.

Oh, I can install Panther into my machine easily enough and run whatever 'classic' OS9 software I want, but the tablet Will Not Go, no matter what, and it doesn't work in the 'clasic' mode either. I tried to use an ADB to USB adaptor but that just didn't do it.

Now it's dual boot mode for me.

Ermmm. On a lighter note, I'll be getting a new ATI Raedon 7000 PCI video card in the mail sometime soon, so I can finally trick out this old beige monster with it's final permutation. I'll be glad for that at least, as I'll have USB 2.0 support for the first time..

Nothing much else to report, am looking for some nice bods to use to make some more James fakes with.

Off to go to an 'out' for Anne Murray who had a concert in Durham N.H, tonight.

    DRM-free Music Application..
For those of you running Macintosh computers that are still running OS 9 or have OSX that's got the classic mode installed, the most excellent Audion 3 streaming/.mp3 player is now FREEWARE! YES!

It's located at http://panic.com/extras/ - don't forget to write down the serial number..

It also had a streaming radio station guide that can download EVERY stream address on the Shoutcast site, and that's almost 5,000 radio streams (you'll need to give it LOTS of RAM to do this, though..)!! Oi! That's alot of music..

The best part is, this application is capable of grabbing the stream you are listeniing to and saving it to your hard drive AS an .mp3. A long one, to be sure, so a decent .mp3 'trimming/editor, to break out the songs individually is needed.

Good sites to look for editors for .mp3 files - http://www.pure-mac.com/ and http://www.macorchard.com/

Music To Annoy The Cat With
Currently my CD player is annoying Celia The Monster by playing lots of Amon Tobin.

It's electronica/lounge/lo-fi/downbeat music, and Mr. Tobin is a DJ mixmaster from Montreal that mixes some of the most harmonic chaos you've ever heard. If you're looking to try a song or two, I recommend starting with the songs 'Verbal' (from his album 'Out From Out Where') or 'Natureland' (from the album 'Supermodified'). This music is *sonic* and sounds incredible on a good stereo system.

If you are interested in listening to some more music in this genre, I recommend http://somafm.com/, which is a streaming radio station in San Francisco that has six or seven different music streams. My current favourite right now is 'Secret Agent'. You can use Winamp or iTunes, and they offer multiple bitrate streams so even on dial-up you can listen. It's very good.
